Providing a Safe, Affordable and  Independent Community for Adults with Disabilities to Live, Work, Play and Worship

About the sanctuary of north georgia

What Our Residents Receive

The Sanctuary provides residents with different abilities a place to call home.

  • Safe: A rural gated community with 24/7 care
  • Affordable: Residents will pay a fair rent that will include room and board. Residents will also be able to use COMP Waiver funding to pay for programs and caregiving.
  • Independent: Adults will be able to live in a small home that they can call their own. They will be offered daily activities as well as work options and be able to live with other friends who
    have similar interests.

The Sanctuary is a community-focused residential program dedicated to supporting adults with developmental disabilities. Residents work and live in our community and are allowed to make decisions that affect all aspects of their lives. This independent living program offers two bedroom/two bath cottages, as well as providing opportunities for jobs, social outings and recreational activities. The Sanctuary will host weekly worship experiences and small group Bible studies on campus.

Our Story

Hutch and Cindy Matteson have been married since 1986 and are the parents of four adult children, one grandson and another on the way. Their advocacy journey began in 1990 with the birth of their first son, Josh, who was born with Down Syndrome. This experience led them to dedicate their lives to supporting individuals with disabilities and their families.

Together, Hutch and Cindy began The PIER Center for Life Enrichment in 2011, an organization that has provided life and job skills training, as they have been opening doors of opportunity for adults with disabilities for over 150 individuals and their families.

The Matteson’s are actively involved in creating resources for the disability community. They started an online community called “Downwiththat.life” for parents, siblings, and caregivers of adults with Down Syndrome, where the focus is on building relationships, living in community, providing support and sharing hope.

Now they are focusing on building The Sanctuary of North Georgia, a Live, Learn, Work, Worship and Play community for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. This dream is becoming a reality as others partner with them in making a newly acquired piece of property in Murrayville, Georgia that place.

The Matteson’s believe that together we can accomplish so much more than we ever could by ourselves.
